Sleep apnea is a disorder in which breathing stops temporarily. It is then resumed after a snorting sound. Apnea is usually accompanied by loud snoring, gasping for air suddenly and feeling tired even after a long night?s sleep. Symptoms like morning headaches, lack of concentration, mood swings, and drying up of the throat also suggest that a person is affected with sleep apnea.

Snoring is a loud sound made by a person during sleep. The vibration of the tissues in the air passage causes the sound. Snoring tends to increase when a person sleeps on his back. Snoring is usually caused when you grow old because the throat muscles become weak and they cause the nearby tissues to sag and vibrate. Snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea or a cause of apnea, but snoring is not sleep apnea. Mild snoring can be cured by regular exercise, avoiding steroids and getting a good amount of sleep.

Heavy snoring can be cured by Uvulo palato pharyngo plasty (UPPP) where the sagging muscles are tightened. It can also be treated with the help of thermal Ablation PlatoPlasty. The treatment differs from person to person and is decided upon by the intensity to which snoring has affected him.

Sleep Apnea is the cessation of breath due to obstruction of the nasal passage. It requires the person to wake up to resume breathing. A person with sleep apnea wakes up a number of times during his sleep but he does not remember anything about it.

Apnea maybe caused due to a stroke, brain infection or a chronic respiratory problem. Its symptoms include a dip in concentration levels, mood swings, tiresomeness, headaches and drying up of the mouth. Sleep apnea can be cured by treatments like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), Variable Positive Airway Pressure (VPAP) and Automatic Positive Airway Pressure (APAP).

Any treatment can be effective only if the ailment is detected early. Apnea has caused premature deaths too. People who snore regularly must check if they have sleep apnea. It?s better late than never.

What’s Insomnia?

Identifying insomnia is a little like the old joke about art: you know it when you’re having it. For people with insomnia, though, it’s no laughing matter. Having reduced or interrupted sleep is as bad for your physical and mental health as getting the wrong, or not enough, food.

People suffering insomnia may experience difficulties falling asleep, waking too early, or sleeping in small bursts throughout the night. Worse yet, someone with sleep difficulties wakes up and doesn’t feel rested, may have trouble focusing, and worry about their sleep problem to the point where they can’t sleep for worrying.

What Can I Do?

Like any other health problem, a combination of medication and new behavior can make a big difference. Behavior changes sleep specialists recommend including exercising regularly early in the day, reducing caffeine consumption, and making sure there’s no TV in the bedroom.

A medication can help reinforce these changes by allowing you to get unbroken, healthy sleep. One medication many physicians recommend is Ambien.

I Don’t Want To Take Sleeping Pills!

Over the years, “sleeping pills” have gotten some pretty bad publicity. Many 50’s movie thrillers involved villains sneaking sleeping pills into the unsuspecting hero’s drink. Famous people (like the poet Sylvia Plath) attempted suicide with sleeping pills. It’s no wonder that you might feel reluctant to take a pill to help you sleep!

But modern drugs that help with sleep are much safer and gentler than the drugs of the past. Ambien works with a chemical in your brain called GABA. GABA helps calm the activity of certain brain cells, allowing you to sleep. Because the drug has a gentle effect on GABA, you won’t wake up in the morning feeling like a zombie – you’ll be refreshed and ready for a new day.

The Doctor’s Office

You don’t need to visit a sleep specialist to get a prescription for Ambien, though you will need to speak with a physician. Talk with your doctor about your current sleep pattern (keeping a sleep diary before your appointment can be useful) as well as the medications you are currently taking.

If Ambien seems like a good match for you, your doctor will probably prescribe it for 7 to 10 days. In rare cases, she may extend the time you use it.

There are many potential causes of sleep apnea. One such cause is an excess of soft tissue in the soft palate or uvula, both of which lie near the back of the mouth and upper throat. If either are too large or too long they can cause an obstruction when a person is sleeping, causing them to stop breathing for a short period of time. A surgery known as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is one possible solution for this type of problem resulting in sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea UPPP typically involves the removal of the tonsils and reduction in size of the uvula and soft palate. UPPP is only a viable option if your doctor has determined that the obstruction is occurring because one of these parts of the body. UPPP is a fairly straightforward procedure, but shouldn’t be done unless there is substantial evidence that the soft palate or uvula is the cause of the obstruction and subsequent sleep apnea. Another similar type of surgery is called uvulopalatopharyngoglossoplasty which involves the removal of part of the tongue.

While UPPP may be the be-all-end-all solution for some people, others still need the use of a device called a continuous positive airway pressure, or more commonly known as a CPAP. A CPAP basically forces the airways to stay open using a certain amount of pressure while a patient is sleeping. Many people hope to discontinue its use after surgery since it requires a mask and can be quite cumbersome. However, if sleep apnea persists a CPAP is necessary for sleep apnea.

Difficulty sleeping can affect many aspects of life. People who don’t get the recommended amount of sleep for their age groups can have a myriad of negative affects.

Daytime crankiness, difficulty concentrating, frequent illness, depression, and accidents are all common problems associated with poor sleep habits.

For some people, getting more sleep is not as easy as going to bed earlier. If you suffer from insomnia, you know how wearisome it can be to lie in bed, unable to sleep.

Doctors can prescribe medication to help, but these medications have undesirable side effects. Stomach problems, dizziness, daytime drowsiness, difficulty awakening, accidents, and poor coordination are all common.

Not only do prescription sleep medications have negative side effects, they also don’t cause healthy sleep. They cause sedation or unconsiousness–not the restful, healing sleep you need.

But you don’t have to choose between sleep deprivation and unwanted medication–nature has provided us with many natural remedies for sleeplessness.

Whether you want a little help falling asleep occasionally or a long-term supplement that will help restore your body’s natural sleep rhythms, you should be able to find an herbal sleep aid that will work for you.

Chamomile

Chamomile is one of nature’s oldest and gentlest herbal sleep aids. It is most often drunk as a tea, which has a mild and pleasant taste. In addition to promoting calm and restfulness, chamomile is also used in cases of stomach irritation.

The benefits of chamomile works when taken occasionally, and is mild enough that it can be used daily for extended periods of time. It doesn’t cause dependency, and has no side effects. It may, though, be an allergen for people who are allergic to daisies.

Experts are not sure how chamomile works to induce sleep. US Pharmacist reports that apigenin, a flavonoid in chamomile, may help to promote sleep, but that other components are probably also involved.

Valerian

Valerian is a root that has long been used as an herbal sleep aid. It has a characteristic smell, like old socks, which comes from isovaleric acid. Valerian can be used to help occasional sleeplessness, but is also particularly helpful taken long-term.

Many studies have shown valerian root to be an extremely safe and effective way to promote sleep. Patients who take valerian report that they feel less anxious and nervous, and have better rest at night.

Clearly, there are many benefits of valerian, and it causes none of the negative effects on concentration and alertness that prescription medications, thereby making it an excellent choice for people who suffer from chronic insomnia. Very high doses may cause certain side effects such as nausea, headaches, and dizziness.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that the body produces at night. It is sometimes called the “sleep hormone” because it is so important to healthy sleep. People who are blind, who suffer from jet lag, or who live in places with extended sunlight hours may have trouble sleeping because their bodies do not produce enough melatonin.

Patients looking for a short-term sleep solution may be helped by taking melatonin supplements, as will persons whose natural wake/sleep cycles have been disturbed. Melatonin is also helpful to people who are trying to wean themselves off of sleep medications.
