The speed of your metabolism is often said to determine how easy you will put on weight or keep it off. To some extent this is true, your metabolism is processing of food to give the body energy and nutrients that it needs to survive. It is thought that 60% of the calories that the metabolism uses are to keep everything within the body functioning. 30% is used to give us the energy to go about our daily activities. 10% of the calories are needed to process the food that is eaten. There are many theories about how to boost the metabolism so that it burns the calories faster and thus allows us to lose weight, eat more food or eat the foods we like to eat and not gain weight. One of these theories is that spicy foods will boost metabolism and aid in weight loss.

There seems to be two camps regarding this theory, those that endorse it and those that think it as a way to make food more interesting and help us to eat foods that are healthier and less fattening.

For those that think it works the theory goes that it increases the thermodynamic burn that goes on in the body when the food is eaten. This means the body must utilize more calories to process the food hence increasing the metabolism.

People that don’t think it is effective still agree that it increases the amount of calories that are needed to process the food. But that it is not a significant amount to make any real difference to boosting the metabolism and weight loss. They do think that adding chili or other spices to foods gives then a better taste or flavor. This encourages people to eat more vegetables and foods that are less fattening.

Green tea, weight loss and long life are on everyone’s lips these days. The Chinese have been using green tea for centuries as an aid to both health and weight loss, but it is only recently that green tea has become popular in the West for these purposes, having originally become known as the drink provided in Chinese restaurants.

Recently a number of research projects have been carried out to determine whether or not the health benefits of green tea are justified. Scientists have discovered that green tea contains high amounts of antioxidants, which are responsible for many of the benefits attributed to the drink.

Substances in green tea which cause thermogenesis are responsible for its ability to help weight loss. Thermogenesis is the mechanism by which the body generates heat, increasing metabolism in the process and therefore burning calories. This is partly due to the presence of caffeine, however, it is greater than the thermogenic effects of caffeine alone. It appears that green tea not only, has compounds that can increase the body’s normal metabolism, but also suppress the appetite, making it an ideal supplement to use as part of your diet. A double blind trial carried out involving 24 men who were given green tea and whose diets, exercise and energy expenditure were monitored, revealed that those who were being given regular dosages of green tea showed a significant increase in their energy expenditure over 24 hours.

One difference in the early days between the Lap Band system and the Swedish adjustable lap band is that the SAGB didn’t have a self-closing mechanism and had to be closed with sutures. An American company, INAMED Health, designed the BioEnterics Lap-Band Adjustable Gastric Banding System, which was introduced in Europe in 1993. The Swedish adjustable gastric band differs from the Lap-Band because it wasn’t designed for use with keyhole laparoscopic surgery.

An allergic reaction to materials contained in the band or for people who have exhibited pain intolerance to implanted devices are contraindications for lap band surgery. Failure of dietary or weight-loss drug therapy for more than one year can make one eligible for the adjustable gastric band procedure. In order to be considered one must have the comprehension of the risks and benefits of the gastric band procedure and willingness to comply with the substantial lifelong dietary restrictions required for long term success.

Inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract like ulcers, esophagitis or Crohn’s disease don’t make one a good candidate for lap band surgery. It’s usually contraindicated if the surgery or treatment represents an unreasonable risk to the patient.

As the upper part of the stomach believes it’s full the message to the brain is that the stomach is full and this sensation helps the person to eat smaller portions and lose weight over time. The surgeon uses a specialized needle is to avoid damage to the port membrane. When fluid is introduced into the stomach the lap band expands, placing pressure around the outside of the stomach; this decreases the size of the passage in the stomach and restricts the movement of food.

The band is inflated and adjusted by way of a small access port placed just under the skin subcutaneously; then radiopaque isotonic solution or saline is introduced into the band via the port. Lap band or gastric band placement, unlike the traditional malabsorptive weight loss surgery (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, biliopancreatic and duodenal switch) does not cut or remove any part of the digestive system. The adjustable gastric band or Lap Band is an inflatable silicone prosthetic device which is placed around the top portion of the stomach using keyhole laparoscopic surgery.

Post surgery the patient should consider eating less, eating more slowly and chewing food thoroughly. The patient may be prescribed a liquid-only diet, followed by soft foods and then solid foods for a varied length of time; each surgeon and manufacturer will vary. The lap band may remain deflated during pregnancy and once breast feeding or bottle-feeding is completed the band may be gradually re-inflated to help with postpartum weight loss if essential.

The World Health Organization recommendation for monthly weight loss is approximately 1.1 to 2.2 pounds per week and an average gastric banded patient may possibly lose this amount. Weight regain can happen with any surgical weight loss procedure including the more radical procedures that initially result in a rapid weight loss.

There is one major problem if you are vegetarian or are thinking of going on a vegetarian diet and that is the lack of protein that will be in your diet. Some of the most common foods that contain adequate protein sources cannot be included in the vegetarian diet and as such need to be got from other sources.

However, vegetarians can get enough protein with just a little effort. One of the easiest ways to get it is by combining two or more incomplete plant proteins. Soy protein can be used to boost the amount of protein, calcium and iron in almost any dish, the beauty of soy is that it will take on the flavor of anything that you choose to use to marinate it or cook with it.
Here are some of the ideas that can be used to good effect when it comes to soy, soy milk is an excellent form and will give you roughly 10 grams of protein, this can be used on your cereals in the morning or you can just drink it. Soy milk can now also be found in different flavors and is also available in a low fat version.

Isolated soy protein is a powdery substance that is almost 90% protein; it is made from de-saturated soy flour and can be used in a wide variety of ways to ensure that the veggie gets enough protein in their daily diet. As a very rough guide around 4 tablespoons of soy protein will give you 23 grams of much needed protein.

Once you have the protein in your diet figured out then there are a few other things that the vegan has to watch out for, these include calcium, Vitamin B12 and Zinc.
For those who consume lactose, dairy products are brimming over with calcium. For the others then you can make sure that enough calcium is included in your diet by eating foods such as broccoli, beans, turnip, calcified orange juice and almonds.

If you are a very strict vegetarian then making sure you get enough Vitamin B12 in your diet can be a major problem. The reason for this is that most B12 is found in products relating to animals, however foods that are particularly high in Vitamin B12 include cereals and bread.

Zinc is an important mineral that should be included in all diets on a daily basis; vegetarians have a little trouble maintaining the amount of zinc in their diet. Zinc can be found in whole grain foods, tofu, nuts, seeds and wheat germ products but there is one big problem with this, zinc that comes from plant rather than animal is absorbed less into the body therefore more needs to be taken in.
Even with the struggle to get these certain foods into the diet the vegetarian diet is still a health way of living and doesn’t affect people in general. In fact some of the best sports personalities are vegetarian.

There are many people in the world who from time to time attempt to lose weight. It is no big secret that people are on average becoming lets say larger. More people decide to start a weight loss program in this month, January, than in any other month, the question however is how many of these people actually succeed? I think the answer would be that not many of them do. What people require is a weight loss plan and diet that actually works. In this article I am going to write about how I successfully lost five stones in weight, enabling me to reach my target weight. What is probably even more important is the fact that I have been able to keep at this ideal weight.

I have struggled to control my weight since I have been a teenager. Like I am sure most people, I love my food and am rather partial to items such as chocolate, pizzas, currys and chips. I am aware that these foods are not exactly healthy but I like them so much that for me to give them up would make life not really worth living.

As you can see I am not exactly open to the idea of giving up food to help me to lose weight. The way to go for me was via exercise.

I first gave jogging a go, however I found this very boring. Then a friend suggested that I should get a dog. He stated that I could take this pet for long walks around five times a day and that this would definately help me to lose weight.

I took up my friends advice and I have not looked back since. Walking the dog five times a day has not only helped me to lose a lot of weight it also helps me to reduce stress and to help me to think in a clearer way, much as in the same way that meditation does.

Being obese or over weight can cause a lot of problems with everyday living, travelling, socialising and your health. By losing even a few excess pounds you can enhance your life and reduce your risks of ill health.

Mobility is impaired by carrying more weight than is normal, putting a strain on your back and joints especially your knees. Carrying fat around your midriff makes you more susceptible to diabetes and obesity increases your risk of heart attacks and strokes. So it seems obvious that any reduction will bring down your risk of endangering your health. Cholesterol levels come down, your pancreas is more able to keep your sugar levels within normal limits and less fat in your body brings down your risk of a stroke.

Being slimmer makes travelling more comfortable, mobility eases, joints are relieved and breathing improves. You will feel more motivated and more positive about yourself so are more likely to continue exercising and eating healthily. Your skin and hair will improve giving you an over all feeling of well being.

Clothes will be easier and more exciting to buy, the choice will increase and you will be able to be more adventurous. Even though we are told every day that more and more of us are over weight there are very few shops on the high street that sell a full range of clothes in larger sizes. It is as we all know hard to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle without really working at it but the benefits are such that they out weight the toil. Knowing that your health has improved and looking in the mirror and seeing the person you want to be is reward enough.
